Young Curator

Young Curator

This role is voluntary and free of cost. Travel, accommodation and food expenses will be covered by the programme.

This role is open to 16-17 year olds (from Years 11 and 12 at school – if you will turn 16 in the summer then you can still apply) from Suffolk and London.

The Food Museum and The Museum of the Home are working together to create a free opportunity for young people to contribute to their work as Young Curators. As a Young Curator, you’ll work with other 16-17 year olds, supported by the Food Museum and the Museum of the Home. You will have a unique opportunity to work behind the scenes in museums and be involved in an exhibition on School Dinners at the Food Museum, and putting together an outcome at the Museum of the Home such as a display or publication.

As a Young Curator you will:
– Carry out research, fieldwork and projects focussed on recording different people’s accounts and memories of school dinners.
– Receive training in areas such as curation and oral history work.
– Contribute to and help develop an exhibition, producing creative responses to the topic of school dinners.
– Take part in one day and overnight residentials (stays of up to three days) in Suffolk and London.
– Go on trips to cultural venues in Suffolk and London.
– Help us install the exhibition at the Food Museum and create an output such as a display at the Museum of the Home.

Marketing & Communications Assistant

Marketing & Communications Assistant

Fixed-term (1 year), part-time (15 hours a week)

£12 an hour

Role

The post-holder will help us build new audiences and raise awareness of our brand. You will get out and about around the museum and create high-quality online content that engages people with the museum’s mission. You will populate channels for communications, including the website and social media. You will assist with day-to-day marketing and communications, including keeping our CRM system and website up to date, assisting with data and analytics, and designing content for print and digital formats.

You will also work with the wider local creative community as part of Stowmarket Culture Group, creating and distributing an e-newsletter showcasing local venues and events along with maintaining the website and growing the Group’s online presence.  It is anticipated that this will take up a day a week.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone who is creative, innovative and enthusiastic about the mission of the museum and the town of Stowmarket and its cultural organisations. You need to be confident using social media and have good IT skills. You should care about fact-checking and accuracy and have good customer service skills. You will be comfortable taking photos, creating content (including video) and you will have basic desktop publishing/design skills. We expect you to come to the museum as you will be collecting content on site, but there is flexibility around days and times.

There may also opportunities for additional casual work at events and in our learning programme, particularly during school holidays, which can be discussed at interview.

Main duties:

  1. Create and select high-quality content and respond to audiences on our social media channels (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook), other relevant platforms (such as Google reviews, TripAdvisor, Wikipedia) and on our website. Work with the Digital Officer to schedule content around upcoming events, exhibitions and activities.
  2. Help to maintain and update the museum website and our CRM system with our changing programme of activities and events.
  3. Design content for marketing campaigns and update the museum’s listings on external websites.
  4. Create and distribute Stowmarket Culture Group’s e-newsletter and maintain its website; build the membership database through attending events and online methods.
  5. Collect and use data and analytics about audiences to inform decision-making. Collate the data from our online and onsite visitor survey.
  6. Support the Visitor Services & Marketing Manager and Digital Officer in the preparation, coordination and distribution of digital and printed publicity and marketing materials.
  7. Answer the phone and respond to visitor questions.
  8. Support with the delivery of museum events, learning and fundraising.

Growing Officer

Growing Officer

Permanent, full-time

£25,000 to £27,000

Role       

The post-holder will have shared responsibility for looking after and developing the museum’s estate, including land, water and building conservation, growing food, looking after animals, delivery of public-facing activities, partnerships and projects and engaging volunteers with the museum’s work. They will also support with the day-to-day activities of the museum, including events and basic maintenance.

Who are we looking for?

The post-holder needs to be happy working in an outdoor setting in all seasons. You should enjoy collaborating with others and sharing your knowledge with the public. We are looking for individuals with an enthusiasm for regenerative agriculture and conservation, who are keen to help the museum achieve an exemplary presentation of its estate.

Main duties:

  1. Work with volunteers and estate team members to grow and maintain crops and animals on the museum’s land using regenerative principles and approaches.
  2. Work with colleagues to design and deliver community growing, green therapy and social enterprise programmes and projects. Help secure funding to deliver programmes.
  3. Design and deliver activities for visitors of all ages to engage people with growing food. Deliver regular public talks.
  4. Ensure that animals are cared for according to best-practice and legal standards. Keep accurate and timely records.
  5. Work with the Suffolk Punch horses to demonstrate historic farming practices.
  6. Take responsibility for staying up-to-date with conservation best practice and legislation.
  7. Work with the Catering Manager and Shop Supervisor to provide supplies from the estate to the café and shop and seek opportunities for income generation.
  8. Recruit, manage and retain volunteers, working creatively to provide opportunities to engage people with the work of the museum. Supervise volunteers working on the estate.
  9. Support with museum events.
  10. Help maintain the museum on a daily basis – checks, basic repairs, equipment maintenance and waste management.
  11. Build partnerships outside the museum, closely liaising with colleagues as necessary, to help the museum to be a more open and welcoming place. Be an ambassador for the museum’s work.
  12. Respond responsibly in the event of an emergency or incident, taking charge as the most senior member of staff where appropriate.
